Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, debuted his new song ‘This Is America’ while he was the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend.
‘This is America’, is Donald Glover’s first single since 2017’s Terrified, off his Grammy-nominated 2016 album Awaken, My Love! The song.
The video, choreographed by Sherrie Silver and directed by frequent Atlanta director Hiro Murai, is a commentary on gun violence in America, and America’s ongoing national meltdown.
In the video, Donald Glover shoots a hooded black man and mows down a choir with a machine gun. Part of the lyrics goes: “Yeah, this is America/ Guns in my area/ I got the strap/ I gotta carry ’em.”
The video In a larger sense, speaks to a global attitude towards black people, a review of what it means to be black in America, how the black experience is perceived as a fun affair versus the dark reality that happens in the background.
Glover’s ‘This is America’ is his latest in a string of major projects. He plays Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is set to hits theaters on May 25, and on May 10, Glover’s FX show Atlanta, which he created and stars in, has its Season 2 finale.
This is America’ video already has more than 13million views on YouTube since its release barely 24hours ago, making it one of the biggest first-day views this year.
