Social media merciless backlash the former Manchester United center-back, Rio Ferdinand on Thursday morning after the British Boxing Board of Control refused to review his application for a professional boxing licence.
Rio Ferdinand who had an illustrious playing career and won 81 England caps, had hoped to enter the ring as part of Betfair’s divisive Defender to Contender challenge.
After the BBBC refused to consider his application, 39-year-old disappointed was forced to hang up his gloves before even taking part in a single fight.
Rio took to Twitter to announce his forced retirement but got the worst backlash from fans.
‘Having been training 4-5 times a week since announcing the aim of achieving a professional boxing licence & stepping into the ring, it is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves on @Betfair #DefendertoContender challenge,’he tweeted.
One fan wrote: ‘What a career Rio Ferdinand had! He will be sorely missed in the boxing world.’
‘Having to admire Rio Ferdinand’s boxing record. Unbeaten just like Floyd Mayweather or Joe Calzaghe,’ another wrote.
‘No one will ever take your 0 Rio,’ a third wrote.
